Poor Rocky Raccoon

I don’t know what it is, but I seem to find injured animals wherever I go. I went for a walk on Cherry Beach with Miranda last night and we found a deathly ill baby raccoon. He was probably only about 8 months old and he was curled up in the bottom of a tree letting people get about a foot away from him. I knew he was sick because he wasn’t moving anything except his head and he was letting dogs on the beach come up and sniff him.

I called the Humane Society and they didn’t do anything but give me the number for animal control. The also said that if it was possible to catch a raccoon, he was probably rabid or poisoned. So finally we called animal control and they came and took him away. I know that we probably gave the poor baby a death sentence and I feel terrible about it, but I also think we did the right thing. If they helped him great, but if they put him to sleep, it’s better than dying of dehydration on the beach. He was so cute though, I felt so bad for him.

He had the look of someone who knew he was dying. He wasn’t shaking with fear anymore by the time animal control took him away but laying there with an expressionless, blank look in his black eyes. He also surrendered without a fight, which is very odd for a wild raccoon.

Watched the Magdalene Sisters last night. I’ve been dying to see it and I missed it when it was on CBC last week so I rented it. Really good. It’s based on true events about the girls growing up in convents / prisons in Ireland. It was terribly sad, and the DVD had a documentary on it interviewing women who grew up in these horrible places. The Catholic Church is very scary to me. I’m glad Ireland’s changing and becoming more liberal; I don’t think I’d move there if the church reigned supreme today. I can’t believe the last Magdalene institution only closed it’s doors in 1996. They say that more than 30, 000 women lived in those places, and most of them didn’t even know why they were sent there. Labeled whores and sluts, some of these young girls were sent there because they were too pretty and therefore were probably going to compromise their chastity. Not because they had ever actually done anything wrong.

yeah, i felt really bad for the little guy. but i figured a quick death was better than sying alone and afraid on the boiling hot beach with dogs sniffing him and people around. it was really sad though.
